Brazil: Lula defends change in Petrobras pricing policy with ‘criteria’

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that, at the moment, the government is not discussing changes in the fuel pricing policy adopted by Petrobras in 2016 but defended changes in the policy “with a lot of criteria.”

Discussions on the topic began after the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, stated that the International Parity Policy (PPI) would be changed by adopting guidelines based on the domestic market.

Silveira said that the IPP would be exchanged for an “Internal Competitiveness Price” policy, which should lead to a diesel price reduction. However, the measure was denied by Petrobras.

Lula said that the government would discuss Petrobras’ pricing policy when it calls for discussion.

“The government will discuss the price policy of Petrobras at the moment the president of the Republic summons the government to discuss it,” said the president.

“As long as the president of the Republic does not convene, we will not change what is working today.”

During the election campaign in 2022, Lula said it was necessary to “customize” the price of gasoline and diesel oil and that there is no reason for Brazil to be subject to the PPI.
