From Thursday, September 15, to Sunday, September 18, the ArtRio cultural fair returns to receive the public 100% in person at Marina da Glória in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone.

More than 60 galleries and 15 art institutions are in the 12th edition of the event.

The galleries can be visited from 1 PM to 9 PM until Saturday, September 17. On Sunday, the hours will be moved forward by one hour: from noon to 8 PM.

In 2021, the fair adopted a hybrid format due to the coronavirus pandemic. To make it accessible to more people, this year, the event will also make the works available on the website, and there will be live broadcasts of part of the event.

According to ArtRio’s president, Brenda Valansi, this edition can be defined as a celebration.

“It will be an edition marked by overcoming, resilience, diversity, creativity, and freedom,” she defines.

“With the travel return, we will also have the presence of many Brazilian collectors and a group with more than 40 collectors from other countries.”

The place will be divided into two: “Land”, which represents the central pavilion in Marina da Glória, and “Sea”, which is the outer part, which has grown even more, with a temporary construction of 3,000 square meters.

The new space was inspired by the lines of the Marina’s surroundings, the mountains, and the wind, with bars and restaurants.

Even Beyoncé will be referenced in the exhibition in a piece exalting the black population and fighting racism.

The artist Pedro Carneiro produced the painting “We are between queens and kings” from the series “Rosa”, alluding to the American singer and her husband, Jay-Z, in a clip that was recorded at the Louvre Museum in Paris, but with Wakanda masks, from “Black Panther”, on their faces.

Instead of Monalisa’s face, the author represented Abdias do Nascimento.

“The drawing does not obey the formality of a figurative painting and is a mixture of many references, from Renaissance to comics. The brushstrokes are free,” explains the artist.

“I want a kid from Oswaldo Cruz to look at it and understand the references: This person reminds me of so-and-so from the street.”

This year’s “Solo” program is curated by the collector Ademar Britto. He has gathered works by nine artists from different regions of Brazil. They bring debates about social inequality, Brazilian peripheries, and distinct realities of marginalized groups.

The program “Mira”, curated by Victor Gorgulho and Henrique Rondinelli, focuses on video art as a platform.

Meanwhile, the “Expansion” program is dedicated to institutions and spaces that have art as social inclusion and work in valorizing and disseminating art and artists.

Finally, the “Vista” program is dedicated to galleries with up to 10 years of existence.

The event also includes the announcement of the winners of the Foco Award, aimed at Brazilian visual artists with up to 15 years of career.

The galleries were selected by the Curatorial Committee (Alexandre Roesler, Antonia Bergamin, Filipe Masini, Eduardo Masini, Gustavo Rebello, and Juliana Cintra).

The event is presented by Instituto Cultural Vale and carried out by BEX Produções, with Dream Factory’s brokerage.

Besides being sponsored by the Municipal Culture Secretary of Rio de Janeiro and the Special Secretary for Culture, the event has the support of the following companies: Beck’s, Movida, Aliansce Sonae, Rio Galeão, Estácio, Osklen, Sauer, Paco Rabanne, Bombay, Woods Wine, Woods Coffee, Ala Master, Windsor Hotels, Shopping Leblon.
