Brazil and ThyssenKrupp to start construction of first Tamandaré-class frigate in September

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Construction of the Brazilian Navy’s first Tamandaré-class frigate will begin next September.

This is according to a visit by the Commander of Naval Operations, Fleet Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, to the facilities of the Brasil Sul shipyard, which was acquired by the German company ThyssenKrupp in 2020, where he was able to see the status of work ahead of the construction of the first ship.

ThyssenKrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul (tkEBS) will be responsible for the development of the four frigates ordered by the Brazilian Navy, according to the agreement signed in March 2020 between Empresa de Gestão de Projetos Navais (Emgepron) and Sociedade de Propósito Específico Águas Azuis (SPE Águas Azuis).

During the visit, Sampaio Olsen participated in a brief explanation by the CEO of SPE Águas Azuis, Fernando de Almeida Queiroz, and the CEO of tkEBS, Paul Kempers. They presented the current state of development of the mobilization phase of the shipyard for the construction of the frigates.

THYSSENKRUPP LOOKS TO THE REGION

With this project, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems aims to go beyond the construction of frigates for the Brazilian Navy and enable the construction of defense vessels in Itajai, Santa Catarina state, for customers throughout South America.

The construction will be carried out with an expected local share of over 30% for the first ship and 40% for the others. The investment amounts to R$9.1 billion (US$1.725 billion).

The contracts were signed by representatives of Empresa Gerencial Projetos Navais (Emgepron) and Águas Azuis, a special purpose entity (SPE) formed by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defesa & Segurança and Atech.
