Bolivia Signs Lithium Deals with Three International Firms
Bolivia’s government has inked deals with three international firms. These agreements aim to test new technologies for extracting lithium from the nation’s vast salt flats.
The signing ceremony took place at the government headquarters in La Paz. President Luis Arce emphasized the need for serious and responsible work from the involved companies.
The strategy focuses on attracting diverse technologies. These will suit Bolivia’s unique salt flats, ensuring higher productivity and quality in lithium extraction. The companies involved are EAU Lithium PTY, Geolith Actaris, and Tecpetrol. They come from Australia, Germany, France, and Argentina.
Each company will work in specific salt flats. EAU Lithium PTY targets Coipasa, Pastos Grandes, and Empexa. Tecpetrol focuses on Pastos Grandes, while Geolith Actaris operates in Coipasa. These regions are in the west and southwest of Bolivia.

Omar Alarcón, president of YLB, outlined the selection process. Companies underwent a thorough technical, economic, and environmental evaluation. The agreements allow for testing technologies developed for lithium production plants.
These tests will last between 90 and 120 days. Upon successful validation, YLB will begin negotiating contracts for industrial-scale plant implementation.
This move matters because lithium powers electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Bolivia’s vast reserves could make it a key player in these growing markets.
The government’s approach balances economic interests with environmental considerations. It also shows Bolivia’s willingness to collaborate with international expertise.
