Argentina’s Milei Seeks Macri’s Support for Reforms and Governability

After visiting Israel and the Vatican, Argentina’s President Javier Milei is back. His trip included a notable meeting with Pope Francis.

Milei’s goal now is to fast-track his Liberty Advances party’s efforts to forge a powerful alliance with Mauricio Macri’s Republican Proposal (Pro) party.

They aim to create a robust congressional bloc of 80 deputies. This move is designed to smooth the path for sweeping economic reforms.

A close source to Milei shared with La Nación the president’s wish for a unified parliamentary front.

This unity is seen as key to forming a political coalition by the 2025 parliamentary elections.

Milei plans to reshuffle his cabinet to make room for Macri‘s interests, agreeing to adjust positions but keeping his key advisers secure.

This core includes Interior Minister Guillermo Francos, Chief of Staff Nicolás Posse, and advisor Santiago Caputo.

Macri has shown a keen interest in the Infrastructure Ministry, covering transport and communications.

This department has been under Economy Minister Luis “Toto” Caputo’s watch since Milei cut down the ministry count.

However, the road to this alliance is not smooth. Karina Milei, the president’s influential sister, opposes merging with Pro.

Pro-leaders like Diego Santilli and María Eugenia Vidal are taking their time to consult with Macri.

Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, a Macri ally, may play a crucial role in these discussions. This period also aligns with potential leadership shifts within the Pro Party in March.

Milei’s Public Support

Despite these challenges, Milei enjoys significant public backing. Government spokesman Manuel Adorni highlighted Milei’s rockstar reception on his return flight.

The video showed passengers cheering and seeking selfies, echoing sentiments of support and resilience.

This public moment underscores the political landscape’s complexity and the strategic maneuvers underway to shape Argentina’s future policies and leadership.
