Argentina Puts Around US$18 Million Into Modernizing Its MEKO-140 Corvettes

Argentina is moving to refit a fleet that has been running on borrowed time. The Navy’s plan to overhaul its Argentina MEKO-140 corvettes would cost more than 30 billion pesos (roughly US$18 million), part of a wider effort to rebuild a military hollowed out by decades of underfunding.

A fleet showing its age

The urgency is structural. Argentina’s principal surface combatants, the MEKO-360 destroyers and MEKO-140 corvettes, date from the 1980s, and one of the six corvettes, the ARA Parker, has been out of service for years. Keeping the rest credible means investing in radars, sensors and command systems rather than buying new hulls the country cannot afford.

Modernization is the pragmatic path: cheaper than replacement, and a way to stretch platforms that would otherwise age out of service entirely.

New jets from Denmark

The naval plan lands as the Air Force takes delivery of its own long-awaited upgrade. Argentina is acquiring 24 second-hand F-16 fighters from Denmark in a deal valued at around US$300 million, with the first batch arriving in December 2025 and the full fleet due by late 2028, the Buenos Aires Times reported.

In June, Denmark even handed over its ceremonially painted red-and-white “Dannebrog” F-16 for transfer. The jets give Argentina its first modern supersonic fighters in a generation, after years flying obsolete aircraft.

Rebuilding on a budget

Together, the corvette refit and the F-16 arrivals mark a real, if modest, rearmament after decades in which Argentina’s forces shrank and equipment aged. The constraint is money: each project has to be justified against a strained public purse, which is why refurbishment and second-hand purchases, rather than new-build fleets, define the strategy.
