Key Facts

World Cup 2026 Ivory Coast: Beat Curaçao two-nil in Philadelphia to reach the knockout stage for the very first time.

Match-winner: Nicolas Pépé struck in each half, in the seventh and the sixty-fourth minutes.

Milestone: It was the Elephants’ first knockout appearance across four World Cup finals.

Original number: Pépé scored half of the four goals Ivory Coast managed in the entire group stage.

Next: Ivory Coast finished second in Group E and now advance to the Round of 32.

Ivory Coast had never survived a World Cup group before Thursday. Two Nicolas Pépé goals against Curaçao changed that, sending the Elephants into the last 32 for the first time in their history.

World Cup 2026 Ivory Coast finally clear the group

Ivory Coast beat Curaçao two-nil at Philadelphia Stadium to secure second place in Group E. The win carried Emerse Faé’s side into the knockout rounds of a World Cup for the first time.

Group E is one of twelve groups in the expanded forty-eight-team tournament, with the top two and the best third-placed teams advancing. Ivory Coast needed only to avoid defeat, and they were rarely troubled.

Nicolas Pépé settled the contest with a goal in each half. The forward had been a peripheral figure earlier in the group, but he delivered when it mattered most.

For Curaçao, defeat ended a tournament debut that had already defied every expectation. The smallest nation by population ever to reach a World Cup leaves with their heads held high.

How Pépé settled it in Philadelphia

The opening goal arrived in the seventh minute and owed plenty to a Curaçao error. After they failed to clear from deep, Yan Diomande broke down the left and squared for Pépé to finish.

Pépé doubled the lead in the sixty-fourth minute with a clinical second. He latched onto a long pass from Ibrahim Sangaré, raced clear of the defence and beat goalkeeper Eloy Room low to his left.

That second goal effectively ended the contest. Curaçao had scored only once in their opening two matches, so a two-goal deficit was always going to be a bridge too far.

The result and the goal times are confirmed on FIFA’s official match centre, which logged the two-nil scoreline in the Group E finale. It was Ivory Coast’s second win of the tournament, after their opening-night defeat of Ecuador.

Both of those victories came at the same venue in South Philadelphia. Ivory Coast were the only nation to play two group matches at the stadium, and they left it unbeaten there.

World Cup 2026 Ivory Coast end a long wait

By The Rio Times’ count, this was Ivory Coast’s fourth World Cup, and the first time they have ever advanced beyond the group stage. They went out in the first round in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

Two of those earlier exits were especially cruel, as the Elephants fell in groups containing eventual finalists. A golden generation built around Didier Drogba and the Touré brothers never made it through.

Pépé’s brace also stood out in the group’s wider numbers. By our calculation he scored half of the four goals Ivory Coast managed across their three matches.

Data provider Opta noted before kick-off that Ivory Coast have now scored in ten of their eleven World Cup matches. That ratio is the highest of any nation in the tournament’s history among teams with at least three appearances.

Curaçao’s historic journey ends with pride

Curaçao finished bottom of Group E with a single point and a goal difference of minus eight. Yet the bare numbers do not capture the scale of their achievement.

The Caribbean island of roughly 156,000 people had never reached a World Cup before this summer. They were the lowest-ranked side in the entire field when the tournament began.

Their defining moment came earlier in the week, a goalless draw with Ecuador in which goalkeeper Eloy Room was outstanding. That point will be remembered long after the scorelines fade.

Veteran coach Dick Advocaat, in his late seventies, guided the project with calm authority. His players gave Curaçao a World Cup story that no result on Thursday could erase.

What comes next

Ivory Coast finished second in Group E on six points, level with group winners Germany. They now move into the Round of 32, the first knockout round of the expanded format.

Their opponent will be confirmed once the remaining groups conclude in the coming days. Whoever it is, Ivory Coast will arrive as a side that has finally broken its group-stage curse.

In the knockout rounds a draw is no longer enough, and every tie must produce a winner. That is uncharted territory for this team and this federation.

For Faé, a former international who played at the 2010 World Cup, the milestone is deeply personal. The Rio Times expects the Elephants to relish their first taste of the last 32.

The question now is how far this group can go. Can a nation that waited two decades for a knockout match make the moment count?
