RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The 32nd round of the 2012 Brasileirão came to a close last night with two Rio clubs in action. There were contrasting emotions for Vasco and Botafogo though, as the former lost 2-1 at home to Internacional, while Fogo won 2-0 away to Figueirense.
For Vasco, the dream of a place in next season’s Copa Libertadores is distant after a reverse against one of their direct rivals for a spot in the G-4. The Cruz-Maltino had taken the lead through full-back Jonas, but a brace from Uruguayan international Diego Forlan gave the points to the Gaúcho side.
Vasco remain five points off fourth with six games to play. But with the club falling into disarray it is difficult to know where their next three points will come from.
It was a far more satisfying evening for Botafogo who comfortably saw off Figueirense. Youngster Bruno Mendes scored his fourth goal in three games before Clarence Seedorf made the points safe before the interval.
While unlikely, Botafogo remain in the battle for a place in the top four and if they can improve their inconsistent home form may just snatch it.
Tonight, the 33rd round begins with league leaders Fluminense hosting Coritiba at the Engenhão Stadium. With tickets at reduced prices, the stadium should be sold out as Tricolores strive to push their club towards the title.
