Soybeans: Chicago, dollar and falling premiums slow business in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Soybean prices were at nominal levels and few offers marked negotiations involving only specific lots.

The Brazilian soybean market had a day with virtually no business and regionalized prices. The Chicago Board of Trade, the dollar and premiums fell, keeping traders away. According to Safras & Mercado, prices were at nominal levels and few offers marked Tuesday’s trading session involving only specific lots.

In Passo Fundo (RS), the 60-kilo soybean bag dropped from R$174 (US$33) to R$173. In the region of Missões, prices fell to R$173. At Rio Grande port, the price fell from R$178 to R$177.

In Cascavel, Paraná, price remained at R$169 a bag. At the port of Paranaguá (PR), the bag stood at R$175.

In Rondonópolis (MT), the bag rose from R$170 to R$ 171. In Dourados (MS), the price stood at R$163. In Rio Verde (GO), the bag increased from R$170 to R$171.

Soybeans in Chicago

The soybean future contracts traded at the Chicago Commodities Exchange (CBOT) closed Tuesday with mixed prices. In a volatile day, the first positions retreated and the others registered moderate gains.

The market began the session with gains, following the rise in oil prices and the drop of the dollar against other currencies. The reversal of oil prices pushed the first positions back into negative territory, reflecting the strong progress of planting in the United States and the poor figure for U.S. crushing in April.

Longer-dated contracts continued to be sustained, albeit moderately, by the performance of the neighboring corn market.

The soybean contracts for delivery in July closed down 13.25 cents a pound or 0.83% at US$15.74 a bushel. The August position was quoted at US$15.21 per bushel, down 4.25 cents or 0.27%.

In by-products, the July position for bran dropped US$4.10 or 0.98% to US$410.80 per ton. In oil, contracts maturing in July closed at 68.67 cents, down 0.30 cents or 0.43%.

Dollar

The commercial dollar closed yesterday’s session down 0.24%, trading at R$5.2530 for sale and R$5.2510 for purchase. During the day, the North American currency fluctuated between a minimum of R$5.2320 and a maximum of R$5.2810.
