03What to See & DoCULTURE

TODAY’S PICK — PINACOTECA — PINA LUZ

Pascale Marthine Tayou, Nocaute — see it before Friday’s rain

If you give one afternoon to São Paulo culture this week, give it to Tayou at the Pina Luz. The Cameroonian artist’s first institutional solo in Brazil fills all seven galleries through August 2, but working-week afternoons are quieter than free Saturdays and Thursday is the last dry day before Friday’s frente fria. Curated by Ana Paula Lopes and the Pina’s director-general Jochen Volz, the show is structured as seven rooms named after international conferences (Berlin, Yalta, Rio-92 and others) that shaped the modern world. Volz calls them “confluences, sounding boxes for the political and poetic history of humanity.”

What to look for: L’enfer du décor, the wall of national flags sewn by young Cameroonians from precarious materials, says more about post-colonial geography in three minutes than most political theory says in three hours. The Plastic Tree installation makes the ecological argument without lecturing. Tayou himself defines the title as “a state of combat, of desolation, the way it feels when every diplomatic solution generates new problems.”

Where to go after: walk to the Estação da Luz across the Praça da Luz, then take Line 4-Amarela one stop to República for an evening drink at the Edifício Copan ground floor. R$40 / R$20 meia · free Saturdays and second-Sunday-of-month · Wed–Mon 10h–18h · Praça da Luz 2.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — MASP AVENIDA PAULISTA

Histórias Latino-Americanas — for the regional argument

If Tayou is the global-political choice, the MASP’s Histórias Latino-Americanas cycle is the regional-political choice, and they pair as a single Pinacoteca-to-Paulista afternoon. Through August 2 across both Lina Bo Bardi buildings: Sandra Gamarra Heshiki’s Réplica (roughly 80 works questioning colonial museum narratives), La Chola Poblete’s Pop andino with 14 watercolours from the Vírgenes cholas series shown at the 2024 Venice Biennale, and Claudia Alarcón & Silät’s Viver tecendo with the Wichí weaving collective from northern Salta.

Combine route: Pina Luz (Tayou, 11h–13h) → Mercadão lunch → Metrô Luz to Paulista (15 min) → MASP (14h–18h). Thursday 10h–18h paid · R$75 / R$37 meia · Tuesday is the museum’s free day · Av. Paulista 1578.

TONIGHT, AFTER 19H

Casa de Francisca and the Vila Madalena rotation

São Paulo’s Thursday live-music spine runs strongest in two corridors. Casa de Francisca at Rua José Maria Lisboa 190, Jardim Paulista, is the room of the moment that took the old Bar dos Arcos format and made it work for serious music; Thursday cover R$40 to R$80 depending on the act. Bourbon Street at Rua dos Chanés 127, Moema, runs Thursday-night blues and jazz with a R$50 cover. Blue Note São Paulo at Avenida Paulista 2073 runs the formal jazz programme with two sets nightly.

In Vila Madalena: Ó do Borogodó at Rua Horácio Lane 21 runs the after-21h samba programme on Thursdays, no cover before 22h, R$25 after. SESC Pompeia at Rua Clélia 93 runs its Thursday programme with the Lina Bo Bardi structural-concrete architecture as half the appeal. Reservations for Casa de Francisca close around 17h.
