Roaming Fees Gone in Paraguay and Uruguay

In the latest development, Paraguay and Uruguay are set to abolish international roaming charges for mobile users.

This move aligns with the “Mercosur End User Charge Elimination Agreement,” as the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry disclosed.

Starting February 22 this year, the new policy becomes effective following Paraguay’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Víctor Verdún, finalizing the ratification.

All Mercosur members agreed to this plan in 2019. It sets out to harmonize international roaming among telecom operators within the bloc.

These operators provide mobile, messaging, and data services.

The key part of this agreement ensures users roaming in another Mercosur country will pay the same as at home. Charges match the user’s own plan and contract terms.

This change matters because it simplifies travel and communication within Mercosur.

It reflects efforts to unify and improve services across member states, making it easier and more cost-effective for residents to use their mobile devices while traveling across borders.

This initiative benefits consumers by reducing costs and fosters unity and cooperation among the Mercosur countries, potentially boosting tourism and business within the region.

Background

The elimination of roaming charges between Paraguay and Uruguay marks a significant step towards regional integration in South America.

This initiative, rooted in the broader Mercosur agreement, highlights the bloc’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and economic cooperation among its members.

Historically, Mercosur has focused on reducing trade barriers and fostering a unified market.

The move to abolish roaming fees extends this ethos to the digital and communication sectors, reflecting the evolving priorities of the union in the digital age.
