Representatives of 11 Brazilian parties say they will oppose printed ballot proposal

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Presidents and representatives of 11 political parties today assured Superior Electoral Court (TSE) Chief Judge LuÌs Roberto Barroso that they trust electronic ballot boxes and will orient their benches to vote against the proposed constitutional amendment (PEC) that would mandate a printed ballot.

The meeting was attended by parties that adopt a more independent position in relation to the 2022 election, such as MDB and PSD, as well as the most conservative, such as PL and Avante. The parties represent over 300 votes in the Chamber, more than enough to block passage of the PEC.

MDB president Baleia Rossi (SP) said the meeting was very positive. “All parties expressed their confidence in the integrity of ballot boxes and will talk to their benches,” he said. The presidents of these parties had previously held a virtual meeting on Saturday to address the issue and decided to speak out against president Bolsonaro’s proposal.

The report  by deputy Filipe Barros (PSL-PR) on the PEC should be voted on Thursday by a Chamber of Deputies committee. The deputy advocates that electronic ballot boxes have a printing system attached, which would enable the voter to deposit the vote in a ballot box and then be counted, using the printed form to prevent fraud.
