RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the first four months of 2022 (January-April), Peruvian agricultural exports totaled US$3 billion, representing an increase of 33.9% compared to what was recorded in the same period of 2021, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

Comparing both periods, foreign shipments of these products in 2021 totaled US$361 million, a figure that represented an increase of 416% over what was obtained in 2022, due to higher exports of unroasted non-decaffeinated coffee (US$343 million) and cane molasses (US$2 million), whose sales increased by 534.6% and 3.0%, respectively. These two products accounted for 95% of traditional agro-exports.

Non-traditional agro-exports totaled US$2.7 billion, 22% higher than in 2021. The main products in the agro-export ranking in that period were fresh grapes for US$619 million (23.3% share); avocados with US$222 million (8.4%); fresh mangoes with US$206 million (7.8%); fresh cranberries for US$130 million (4.9%), and frozen mango with US$107 million (4%).

Similarly, other fresh fruits recorded sales of US$77 million (2.9%); fresh or refrigerated asparagus for US$67 million (2.5%); animal feed for US$66 million (2.5%); bananas including plantains for US$45 million (1.7%); crude palm oil for US$38 million (1.4%); other paprika for US$37 million (1.4%); cocoa beans for US$37 million (1.4%). These 12 products together accounted for 62% of the non-traditional export supply.

The products with the highest contribution in the first four months of the year were fresh grapes (38.2%), fresh cranberries (135.8%), crude palm oil (281.4%), tara seed mucilage (212.3%), frozen mango (17.7%), palm oil and its fractions (188.5%), animal feed (25%), ethyl alcohol (134.9%), other paprika (49.6%), lemon essential oils (159.7%), among the main ones.

Midagri highlighted that in the basket of non-traditional products, exports of fruits and vegetables, whose sales reached US$1.4 billion Free On Board (FOB) (63% of non-traditional agro-exports) as of April 2022, meant an increase of 16.9% over the same period of 2021.

The main destination markets for Peruvian agricultural products are the United States, the Netherlands, Spain, China, Germany, Ecuador, Mexico, Chile, and Hong Kong. This group of nations accounted for 74.6% of the total FOB value exported in the study period.
