Nemak makes the aluminum bones of the modern car — engine blocks, battery boxes, the structural frame you never see — and it is betting that electric vehicles will need even more of them. That bet is getting bigger: in February 2026, Nemak absorbed a Swiss rival and changed its CEO in the same breath.

What it is

Founded in 1979 and headquartered in García, Nuevo León, Nemak specialises in high-pressure die casting of complex aluminum parts — cylinder heads, engine blocks, battery housings, subframes, and shock towers — for automakers worldwide.

Its manufacturing footprint spans 53 production facilities and 12 product development centres across 16 countries. Customers include Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen, and BMW, among other major vehicle makers.

Who owns it

In September 2021, Nemak completed its merger with Controladora Nemak, achieving full independence from Grupo Alfa following the 2020 spin-off of Alfa’s stake.

Nemak now operates with a dispersed shareholder base; as of mid-2025, no single entity holds a majority stake, with ownership dominated by institutional investors — Norges Bank Investment Management holds approximately 3.00% and Vanguard Group 1.42% — while notable individual shareholders include Álvaro Fernández Garza (1.78%) and Armando Garza Sada (1.55%), reflecting historical ties to the Alfa conglomerate. The EODHD data show insiders at 3.4% and institutional holders at 19.4%, leaving a large free float in public hands.

Who runs it

The board appointed Hervé Boyer as Chief Executive Officer effective April 1, 2026, bringing over 30 years of international experience in senior management and operational leadership in the automotive industry. He served most recently as Global Chief Operating Officer and Executive Board Member at Nexteer Automotive.

Alberto Sada has been Chief Financial Officer since 2015, having joined Nemak in 1994 and held roles across financial planning, treasury, and information technology. The board of 12 directors is chaired by Álvaro Fernández Garza, and includes a minimum of 25% independent members as required by Mexican securities law.

The money, in plain words

Nemak sells roughly USD 5.1 billion worth of aluminum parts a year — and is currently losing money doing it. For every dollar of sales, it loses about 1.5 cents — a net margin of −1.54% — meaning the business as a whole is not yet covering all its costs.

For every dollar shareholders own, it destroyed about 4.7 cents of value last year — a return on equity of −4.69%, which is the wrong side of zero.

The three-year picture is mixed: revenue grew roughly 30% from 2023 to 2025 (our calculation), but the bottom line swung from a thin USD 13 m profit in 2023 to a USD 116 m loss in 2025, as higher volumes collided with the twin pressures of a slower-than-expected EV transition and weaker demand from North American and European carmakers. Net debt was reduced by USD 130 m year-over-year, ending 2025 at USD 1.4 billion — a burden that will grow heavier if earnings stay negative.

At a market value of roughly USD 566 m against annual sales of USD 5.1 bn (our calculation), the market is pricing this as a turnaround story, not a comfortably profitable one. There is no P/E ratio to quote — you cannot divide by a loss — and no dividend is being paid.

What it is doing now

In February 2026, Nemak completed the acquisition of GF Casting Solutions’ automotive business after all required regulatory approvals were satisfied; the deal strengthens Nemak’s global footprint, diversifies its customer base, and accelerates the shift beyond traditional combustion powertrain components toward structure and chassis systems.

The transaction covers a business that generated approximately USD 707 m in annual revenue in 2024, adds nine production facilities and roughly 2,500 employees, and carried an upfront closing payment of USD 216 m funded with existing cash. Around 80% of the acquired product portfolio is in electric-mobility, structure, and chassis applications.

What to watch

  • Path back to profit. A net loss of USD 116 m and a USD 1.4 bn debt load leave no room for error; the key question in 2026 is whether revenue guidance of USD 5.3–5.5 bn — management’s own target, alongside earnings (EBITDA) of USD 630–650 m and capital spending of USD 385–395 m — is achievable as it digests the GF acquisition simultaneously.
  • EV transition timing. The deal strengthens Nemak’s exposure to electric and hybrid vehicle platforms amid tightening emissions targets, but also highlights the need to balance growth with trade risks and evolving North American tariff dynamics.
  • New CEO, new chapter. After 42 years of service, including 13 as CEO, Armando Tamez stepped down at end of March 2026; how quickly Boyer stamps his strategy on a company mid-acquisition is the management watch item for 2026.
  • Share buybacks. Shareholders approved a maximum share repurchasing programme of MXN 1,000 m (USD 57.6 m at current rates) for 2026 — a signal of confidence, though small relative to the debt load.

This is news, not investment advice.
