Brazil are top of Group C. Matheus Cunha scored twice and Vinicius Júnior added a third in first-half stoppage time as Brazil beat Haiti 3-0 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, a clean controlled performance that puts them ahead of Morocco on goal difference before the June 24 finale against Scotland in Miami.

Paraguay beat Türkiye 1-0 in Santa Clara, holding on with ten men for the entire second half to stay alive in Group D. Türkiye are eliminated.

Morocco beat Scotland 1-0 in Foxborough: Ismael Saibari scored after just 72 seconds, his second World Cup goal in two games. Scotland still need a point from the Brazil game on June 24 to advance from Group C.

Tonight, Ecuador play Curaçao in Toronto at 6pm ET. It is not optional; a draw or a loss effectively ends their World Cup, and Beccacece’s side need goals as well as three points before the Germany game on June 25.

As always, The Rio Times covers Latin America’s full sports landscape.

Brazil 3-0 Haiti — Cunha delivers, Vinicius seals it, Brazil top the group

Brazil WC

Matheus Cunha was not supposed to start. He came in to replace Igor Thiago in the lineup and responded with the best performance of Brazil’s World Cup so far: two goals, relentless pressing, and the kind of physical and technical quality that reminded everyone why Ancelotti had options in attack even without Neymar.

His first goal in the 23rd minute was scrappy, a prodded finish from close range after Haiti failed to clear; his second in the 36th was the opposite: a sharp turn and a precise finish that showed a player fully in control of the moment.

Vinicius Júnior put the result beyond doubt in the third minute of first-half stoppage time, played through by Lucas Paquetá and finishing with the composure that has become his calling card at club level with Real Madrid.

The second half was a quiet management exercise. Haiti switched to a 4-4-2 and pressed higher; Brazil took their foot off the pedal and allowed the game to wind down at 3-0, which is where it finished.

Haiti are the first team eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, and their place in the tournament was nonetheless historic: only the second Caribbean nation to qualify for the World Cup, and their first appearance since 1974.

The result took Brazil top of Group C on goal difference ahead of Morocco, who had beaten Scotland 1-0 earlier in the evening. Both sides have four points; Morocco’s finale is against Haiti, Brazil’s is against Scotland in Miami on June 24.

Neymar watched from New Jersey. Scotland, meanwhile, must now beat Brazil to be certain of advancing.

In short — Brazil 3-0 Haiti; Cunha 23′ and 36′, Vinicius 45+3′; Haiti eliminated — the first team out of the 2026 World Cup; Brazil go top of Group C on goal difference ahead of Morocco, both on four points, ahead of the June 24 finale.

Paraguay win with ten men — Galarza in the second minute, then 88 minutes of survival

World Cup

Matías Galarza picked up the ball at the edge of the Turkish penalty area in the second minute, had a sudden look at goal, and sent a low 25-metre strike into the corner past Uğurcan Çakır for the earliest goal of Paraguay’s World Cup campaign in 16 years.

It was also just about the last meaningful attacking action Paraguay managed all evening.

Paraguay played the entire second half with ten men, after a red card reduced their options and forced Gustavo Alfaro into a complete defensive reorganisation at half-time.

What followed was 45 minutes of concentrated resistance; Türkiye created 32 shots (xG 2.10) but did not score. Gill made a brilliant stop from Uzun in the 89th minute; Gül missed the rebound from close range.

Julio Enciso played a full role before being replaced near the end, and twice came close to making it two, a moment that would have finished the argument much earlier.

Türkiye are eliminated. Paraguay are alive, on three points, facing Australia on June 25 in their final group game; a win gives them a realistic chance of advancing as one of the eight best third-placed teams, even if not as a group qualifier directly.

For a team that had lost 4-1 to the USA six days earlier, it was a remarkable recovery of nerve and tactical discipline.

In short — Paraguay 1-0 Türkiye; Galarza scored in the second minute; Paraguay played the entire second half with ten men; Türkiye had 32 shots and an xG of 2.10 but did not score; Türkiye are eliminated; Paraguay face Australia on June 25 still with a path forward.

Saibari scores in 72 seconds — Morocco beat Scotland, and Group C sets up perfectly

World Cup

Ismael Saibari scored his second World Cup goal in two games after just 72 seconds in Foxborough: Brahim Díaz dropped the ball over the top into the right channel, Saibari brought it down cleanly, and volleyed it into the top corner past Angus Gunn before most of the Scottish supporters had settled into their seats.

The same Saibari who chipped Alisson in the 21st minute of the Brazil draw on June 13 is now two goals from two games and one of the most dangerous wide forwards at this tournament.

Scotland pressed for an equaliser throughout the second half: McTominay went close, McGinn went close, a late Dykes header drifted wide, but could not find the goal that would have changed the group picture entirely.

Group C standings after matchday two: Brazil four points, Morocco four points, Scotland three points, Haiti zero; eliminated.

The June 24 finale: Brazil vs Scotland in Miami, Morocco vs Haiti in Atlanta at the same time. Brazil and Morocco are effectively through; Scotland need a win against Brazil to advance.

Scotland have never beaten Brazil at a World Cup (four attempts) and have not won a knockout stage game since 1974. They need to do it in Miami in five days.

In short — Morocco 1-0 Scotland; Saibari scored in the second minute for his second WC goal in two games; Scotland are third in Group C on three points and need to beat Brazil on June 24 in Miami to advance; Brazil vs Scotland is the group’s defining finale.

Ecuador must win tonight — then Uruguay face Cape Verde on Sunday

World Cup

Ecuador vs Curaçao kicks off tonight at BMO Field in Toronto at 6pm ET, South America’s next World Cup action after a full Friday of results.

Ecuador are on zero points after the Ivory Coast defeat, having hit the woodwork three times and still lost 1-0. A win tonight is not optional; it is the minimum required to keep their tournament alive before the Germany game on June 25.

Curaçao were beaten 7-1 by Germany and will arrive in Toronto bruised and short of confidence. Ecuador should win convincingly; the margin matters because Germany lead Group E and Ecuador need goal difference to work in their favour if results go close on the final matchday.

On Sunday June 21 in Miami (6pm ET), Uruguay face Cape Verde, a game that felt routine and does not now. Without De Arrascaeta and Araújo, Sunday is exactly the type of low-block game Uruguay struggled with against Saudi Arabia.

In short — Ecuador vs Curaçao tonight at 6pm ET in Toronto — must-win and goals are needed; Uruguay vs Cape Verde on Sunday at 6pm ET in Miami — Uruguay cannot afford another dropped point from a game they should win.

USA clinch Group D — and Pulisic’s calf becomes the story behind the story

World Cup

The United States beat Australia 2-0 in Seattle on Friday night: an Australian own goal, then an Alex Freeman header, clinching first place in Group D after Paraguay had beaten Türkiye 1-0 in Santa Clara in the earlier game.

Christian Pulisic sat out the Australia match with a calf injury, the same type of problem that has sidelined Neymar. The timing matters: the United States enter the knockout stage in nine days and Pulisic’s availability for that opening game is genuinely uncertain.

Without him, the United States were still composed and well-organised, with Freeman’s headed goal showing that the squad’s depth can carry the weight when the key man is absent.

Paraguay now face Australia on June 25 with three points from two games. A win gives them a realistic shot at advancing as one of the eight best third-placed teams across the tournament; a loss ends their World Cup.

Türkiye are eliminated: three games without a goal across two World Cups, a programme of technical investment that has not yet translated into tournament results.

In short — USA 2-0 Australia; USA clinch Group D first place; Pulisic sat out with a calf injury and his knockout-stage availability is uncertain; Paraguay face Australia on June 25 needing a win to have any chance of advancing; Türkiye are eliminated.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

How did Brazil perform against Haiti?

Brazil won 3-0 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with all three goals in the first half. Matheus Cunha, who replaced Igor Thiago in the starting lineup, scored in the 23rd and 36th minutes; the first was a scrappy prodded finish, the second a sharp turn and precise strike.

Vinicius Júnior sealed it at 45+3′, played through by Paquetá and finishing one-on-one. The second half was uneventful; Brazil took their foot off the pedal and Haiti could not convert their limited opportunities.

Does Paraguay still have a chance after beating Türkiye?

Yes. Paraguay beat Türkiye 1-0 in Santa Clara: Galarza’s second-minute strike, then 88 minutes of defending with ten men, and now sit on three points in Group D with one game remaining. They face Australia on June 25.

A win against Australia would give Paraguay a realistic shot at advancing as one of the eight best third-placed teams. The expanded format means the best third-placers go through; Türkiye are eliminated, USA have clinched first.

What does Scotland need to qualify from Group C?

Scotland need to beat Brazil on June 24 in Miami to be certain of advancing. They currently sit third in Group C on three points, behind Brazil and Morocco who both have four.

A draw might also be enough if Morocco beat Haiti narrowly; Scotland could advance as a third-placed team. Anything less than a win against Brazil, though, is a very uncertain route.
