Today’s Latin America sports news is headlined by a historic night in Miami. Venezuela stunned the United States 3-2 in the World Baseball Classic final, claiming their first-ever title behind tournament MVP Maikel Garcia’s sacrifice fly, Wilyer Abreu’s booming solo homer, and Eugenio Suarez’s clutch ninth-inning double that silenced a star-studded American lineup. Across the Atlantic, Vinicius Junior scored twice as Real Madrid dismantled Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate to reach the Champions League quarterfinals. Back in South America, Lanus humiliated a winless Newell’s 5-0 with Dylan Aquino’s hat-trick in the Argentine Apertura. This is part of The Rio Times’ daily coverage of Latin American sports.

Venezuela Stun USA 3-2 to Win First World Baseball Classic Title

Baseball

Venezuela are world champions for the first time. In front of a raucous, overwhelmingly pro-Venezuelan crowd of 36,190 at loanDepot Park in Miami, La Vinotinto overcame the most talented American roster ever assembled to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory in the 2026 World Baseball Classic final on Tuesday night.

Starter Eduardo Rodriguez set the tone with 4.1 scoreless innings against a lineup featuring Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, and Kyle Schwarber. Tournament MVP Maikel Garcia — who led all players with 10 hits and a .385 average — opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the third inning that scored Salvador Perez. Wilyer Abreu, the hero of Venezuela’s quarterfinal comeback against Japan, drilled a 414-foot solo homer off Nolan McLean in the fifth to make it 2-0.

The Americans appeared finished until Harper launched a mammoth 432-foot, two-run homer off Andres Machado in the eighth to tie it at 2-2. But Venezuela refused to buckle. In the top of the ninth, pinch-runner Javier Sanoja reached scoring position and Eugenio Suarez laced an RBI double off Garrett Whitlock to restore the lead at 3-2. Closer Daniel Palencia then struck out Kyle Schwarber, Gunnar Henderson, and Roman Anthony — the last on a 100 mph fastball — to seal the championship and his second save in as many nights.

KEY STAT — Garcia finished the tournament 10-for-26 with seven RBI and an RBI in all three elimination games. Three Venezuelans made the All-Tournament Team: Garcia, first baseman Luis Arraez, and shortstop Ezequiel Tovar. Venezuela join Japan, the Dominican Republic, and the USA as the only nations to have won the WBC.

Brazils Vinicius Junior and Uruguays Valverde Star as Real Madrid Oust Man City From Champions League

Football

Brazilian star Vinicius Junior scored twice as Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday — 5-1 on aggregate — to reach the Champions League quarterfinals for the fourth time in five seasons at City’s expense. The 15-time European champions will likely face Bayern Munich in the next round.

The decisive moment came in the 22nd minute when Vinicius’s shot was blocked on the line by Bernardo Silva’s arm. The City captain was shown a straight red card and Vinicius converted the resulting penalty after missing one in the first leg. Erling Haaland pulled one back before half-time with a close-range finish, but 10-man City could never genuinely threaten on aggregate. Thibaut Courtois was outstanding before coming off injured at the break, making several crucial saves. Vinicius added his second in the 90th minute plus stoppage time, sweeping home a Tchouameni cross to cap a night that also featured Uruguayan Fede Valverde in an influential midfield role — after his first-leg hat-trick had already set the tone.

Vinicius responded to the City crowd — who had mocked him over his 2024 Ballon d’Or loss to Rodri — with a crying gesture after scoring, later telling reporters he wanted to prove himself to those same fans.

KEY STAT — Vinicius Junior now has 16 Champions League knockout-stage goals, trailing only Lionel Messi among non-European scorers in the competition’s history. Real Madrid have eliminated Man City from Europe in four of the last five seasons.

Lanus Humiliate Winless Newells 5-0 as Aquino Scores Hat-Trick

Lanus demolished bottom-of-the-table Newell’s Old Boys 5-0 at La Fortaleza in the highlight of Argentine Apertura Fecha 11 action on Tuesday. The rout deepened the crisis engulfing the Rosario club, who remain winless through 11 matches with just three points — last in Zona A and sinking in the relegation averages.

Walter Bou opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 16th minute after a handball by defender Martin Ortega. Dylan Aquino then took over: his first arrived on 37 minutes with a precise left-footed finish after a long ball from midfield, his second three minutes later following a sublime backheel assist from Ramiro Carrera, and his hat-trick goal came eight minutes into the second half. Eduardo Salvio completed the rout moments later from close range — remarkably, the fifth goal came directly from Newell’s kickoff after the fourth.

The result lifted Lanus to fourth in Zona A with 15 points, firmly in playoff contention under Mauricio Pellegrino. Newell’s, managed by Frank Kudelka since the sacking of the Orsi-Gomez duo, face an existential struggle with relegation looming.

KEY STAT — Newell’s had not conceded five goals before the 55th minute since a 6-2 loss to Los Andes in December 1962, when the club was in the second division. Aquino’s hat-trick was the first by a Lanus player in the Apertura this season.

Argentine Apertura Fecha 11 Wrap: Central Cordoba Edge Riestra, Estudiantes Rally in Mendoza

Football

Tuesday’s remaining Apertura fixtures completed Fecha 11 across both zones. Central Cordoba de Santiago del Estero beat Deportivo Riestra 1-0 at the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades thanks to a stoppage-time first-half goal from Ezequiel Naya, who raced clear on the left and finished across the goalkeeper in the 47th minute. Riestra, who remain one of three teams without a win this season, were the better side for much of the half but paid for their profligacy when Alexander Diaz missed a gilt-edged chance moments earlier.

In Mendoza, Estudiantes de La Plata came from behind to beat Gimnasia de Mendoza 2-1, with Alexander Medina’s side showing improved resolve after back-to-back defeats. The Pincha moved to 17 points and second in Zona A behind leaders Velez (22 points). Lanus sit fourth with 15, while Newell’s prop up the group with just three points.

KEY STAT — Riestra have now gone five consecutive matches without scoring a goal. The club’s only win in 2026 came in the Copa Argentina against Deportivo Maipu.

WBC All-Tournament Team: Three Venezuelans, Tatis Jr and Ohtani Headline

Baseball

Major League Baseball announced the 2026 World Baseball Classic All-Tournament Team on Tuesday night, with newly crowned champions Venezuela producing three of the 12 selections. MVP Maikel Garcia (3B), Luis Arraez (1B), and Ezequiel Tovar (SS) represented La Vinotinto on the squad. Japan’s Shohei Ohtani was the only holdover from the 2023 All-Tournament Team despite Japan’s quarterfinal elimination.

The Dominican Republic contributed catcher Austin Wells and outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr, whose tournament ended in the semifinal loss to the United States. Losing finalists USA placed four: second baseman Brice Turang, outfielder Roman Anthony, and pitchers Paul Skenes and Logan Webb. Italy‘s Cinderella run earned spots for outfielder Dante Nori and pitcher Aaron Nola. The USA pitching staff set a new WBC record for strikeouts, but their offense managed just four runs across the final two games — a damning indictment of the most decorated batting order in tournament history.

KEY STAT — Garcia’s 10 hits were two more than any other player in the tournament. Salvador Perez, 35, caught every Venezuela game and said afterwards he could now retire fulfilled — having been a pinch-runner replacement when Kansas City won the 2015 World Series.

Brasileirao Rodada 7 Preview: Palmeiras-Botafogo and Vasco-Fluminense Headline Midweek

Preview

The Brasileirao returns on Wednesday and Thursday with a blockbuster seventh round. Leaders Sao Paulo (16 points) travel to Arena MRV to face an inconsistent Atletico-MG, looking to extend their unbeaten run and hold off second-placed Palmeiras, who host struggling Botafogo in a clash of contrasting fortunes. Palmeiras boast the division’s best attack (14 goals in six games), while Botafogo sit in the relegation zone.

The Maracana hosts a Carioca derby as Vasco face Fluminense — the former desperate to escape the bottom four, the latter pushing for a title challenge. Other notable fixtures include Flamengo hosting newly promoted Remo, Santos welcoming Internacional, and Gremio facing Vitoria. The round carries added significance as the last before the FIFA World Cup qualification window begins to influence squad planning.

KEY STAT — Bahia have the best defense in the Brasileirao, conceding just three goals in five games. Remo’s inclusion marks the first time a team from Brazil’s northern region has played in Serie A since Paysandu in 2005.
