This report provides a concise overview of the most significant military and defense developments in Latin America and around the world for the week of June 22–28, 2025.

It highlights major global events—including escalating conflicts, alliance actions, and diplomatic shifts—as well as key regional updates such as multinational exercises, military modernization programs, and evolving security dynamics.

Designed for policymakers, analysts, and readers seeking a clear understanding of current defense trends, this summary delivers timely insights into the rapidly changing landscape of international security.

Major Global Developments

Iran-Israel Conflict and US Military Intervention

The most significant military development of the week was the escalation of the Iran-Israel conflict that began on June 13, 2025, culminating in direct US military intervention on June 22.

The United States conducted Operation Midnight Hammer, striking three Iranian nuclear facilities using bunker-buster bombs and Tomahawk missiles.

The facilities targeted included the Fordow Uranium Enrichment Plant, Natanz Nuclear Facility, and Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center.

President Donald Trump declared the facilities “completely and totally obliterated,” though preliminary intelligence assessments suggested more limited damage.

The conflict, dubbed the “12-Day War,” ended with a ceasefire on June 24, 2025, after both sides sustained casualties and infrastructure damage.

NATO Summit in The Hague

The NATO Summit in The Hague on June 24-25, 2025 marked a historic milestone as the first NATO summit hosted by the Netherlands.

The summit achieved a major breakthrough with all 32 member states agreeing to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, split into 3.5% for direct military expenditures and 1.5% for infrastructure, cybersecurity, and resilience.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in his inaugural summit, urged the alliance to “shift to a wartime mindset and turbocharge our defense production and defense spending”.

The summit reaffirmed Article 5 commitments and continued support for Ukraine.

European Defense Initiatives

The European Council adopted significant defense conclusions on June 26, 2025, emphasizing that Europe must become “more sovereign, more responsible for its own defense”.

The Council welcomed the adoption of the Security Action For Europe (SAFE) regulation and the activation of national escape clauses under the Stability and Growth Pact to increase defense spending.

Latin America Regional Developments

Multinational Military Exercise in Chile

Exercise Southern Star 2025 concluded on June 8, 2025, representing the largest special operations forces training exercise in the Western Hemisphere.

The exercise involved over 2,700 troops from six countries including Chile, the United States, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, and Paraguay.

The exercise covered 3,700 kilometers from northern Chile to Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, featuring 67 land vehicles, 42 aircraft, and 4 naval units.

Operations included 37 tactical actions, 193 air operations, 14 paratroop drops, and 9 infiltration missions.

US Medical Missions in Latin America

AMISTAD 2025 launched on June 2, 2025, with US Air Forces Southern conducting a 10-week global health engagement across five Latin American nations: Peru, Suriname, Paraguay, El Salvador, and Panama.

The mission included both active-duty and reserve medical personnel working in hospitals and clinics to build interoperability while providing deployment readiness training.

The USNS Comfort hospital ship continued its Continuing Promise 2025 mission, arriving in Grenada on June 9 and later in Colón, Panama on June 25.

The ship provided medical treatments including dental, family medicine, optometry, and veterinary services.

Individual Country Developments

Brazil received its first two Italian Centauro II 8×8 armored vehicles on May 21, 2025, marking the beginning of a major modernization program involving 98 units valued at R$5 billion. The vehicles will replace aging EE-9 Cascavel reconnaissance vehicles.

Additionally, Brazil’s Supreme Court conducted a historic confrontation between military officers accused of plotting a coup to keep former President Jair Bolsonaro in office. The trial represents a significant break from decades of military impunity in Brazil.

Colombia is set to receive Swedish Gripen fighter jets beginning in July 2025, with the first aircraft arriving for demonstration at the Rionegro Air Show. The $3.9 billion acquisition represents a generational leap in Colombian air power.

Argentina strengthened its tactical mobility with a new batch of Polaris MRZR 4×4 ultralight vehicles incorporated on April 26, 2025.

The country is also preparing to receive its first six F-16 fighter jets by the end of 2025, with the remaining 18 aircraft arriving over the next three years.

Diplomatic Tensions

The Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly convened amid significant tensions over the Iran-Israel conflict.

The US State Department called on Latin American countries to “choose which side they are going to be on” in the conflict with Iran.

While Argentina strongly backed Washington, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Mexico expressed concerns about the military escalation.

Global Military Developments

Ukraine-Russia War Continues

The Ukraine-Russia conflict remained active with 153 combat clashes recorded on June 28, 2025.

Russian forces launched 4 missile strikes and 57 airstrikes using 111 guided bombs and deployed 3,633 kamikaze drones.

Russia initiated a major offensive in the Zaporizhzhia direction, with significant territorial gains reported.

Asia-Pacific Tensions

China launched military patrols in the South China Sea in response to US-Philippines joint exercises.

The People’s Liberation Army’s Southern Theater Command conducted combat readiness patrols around Huangyan Dao (Scarborough Shoal).

North Korea conducted nuclear strike drills simulating counterstrike capabilities against US and South Korean forces.
