RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Fluminense opened up a nine point gap over second placed Atlético-MG after the 29th round of matches in the 2012 Brasileirão last night. Whilst Atlético were comprehensively beaten 3-0 away to Internacional, Flu won a tough game 2-0 against Bahia in the Northeast.
Indeed, the Laranjeiras outfit were the only Carioca club to come away victorious yesterday.
Botafogo lost 2-0 at home to Santos, Vasco lost by the same scoreline against São Paulo and Flamengo lost a topsy-turvy encounter 3-2 away to Corinthians.
Yet it was Flu’s day, whose high-tempo display put Bahia on the backfoot for the majority of the game. Goals from full-back Bruno and Rafael Sóbis sealed the win, with some fans already celebrating, somewhat prematurely, that the side are champions.
Despite having such a large lead, nine rounds remain until the end of the campaign and the players would do well to remember that.
Goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri once again made important saves, but in the second half in particular it was Bahia stopper Marcelo Lomba who was put under increasing pressure as the Tricolor upped their game. Next up is a home encounter against Ponte Preta and another opportunity to move one step closer towards the crown.
