Key Points

Red Bull Bragantino dismantled Flamengo 3-0 in Bragança Paulista, ending Flamengo’s six-match unbeaten run and inflicting Leonardo Jardim’s first loss as manager

Goals from Isidro Pitta (a stunning chip over Rossi), Gabriel (a strike from the edge of the area), and Lucas Barbosa (a towering header) gave Bragantino a commanding win before halftime was even over

Flamengo drop to 6th place with 14 points after Erick Pulgar was sent off early in the second half — the result could have been worse, with Bragantino having a fourth goal disallowed by VAR

Flamengo’s honeymoon under Leonardo Jardim came to a sharp end on Thursday as Red Bull Bragantino delivered a comprehensive 3-0 victory in Brasileirão Round 9, with the home crowd serenading the final minutes with olés. It was the Flamengo Bragantino result nobody in Rio expected — and it raises questions about squad depth as the season intensifies.

Two Goals Before Halftime Settled It

Flamengo arrived at the Estádio Cícero de Souza Marques missing key players including Arrascaeta and Léo Pereira, and it showed from the opening whistle. Misplaced passes and loose marking allowed Bragantino to dominate possession and territory. The hosts needed only 16 minutes to convert their pressure: Juninho Capixaba launched a stunning long ball from before the halfway line, Paraguayan striker Isidro Pitta controlled and, in one touch, chipped the ball over goalkeeper Rossi. It was the kind of goal that makes highlight reels — and it set the tone for everything that followed.

Flamengo never recovered their composure. When they did hold the ball, collective play disintegrated into isolated individual efforts. Bragantino continued to find space at will, hitting the woodwork twice through Matheus Fernandes and Herrera before extending their lead on 38 minutes. A rehearsed corner routine fell to Gabriel on the edge of the box, and he arrowed a shot into the top corner — another goal worthy of the occasion.

Pulgar Red Card Killed Any Comeback Hope

Jardim made attacking substitutions at halftime, but the plan collapsed three minutes into the second half when Erick Pulgar struck Sant’Anna in the face and was sent off after a VAR review. Down to ten men and already trailing by two, Flamengo’s night was effectively over.

Bragantino took full advantage. On 54 minutes, Lucas Barbosa met a corner with a powerful header to make it 3-0. The hosts nearly added a fourth — Mosquera’s goal was chalked off for a handball in the buildup, and Rossi produced a point-blank save from Pitta — but the scoreline could easily have been more embarrassing. Flamengo managed virtually no threat in the final 30 minutes, reduced to hopeful set pieces that troubled nobody.

What It Means for the Table

Flamengo drop to sixth with 14 points — their first defeat since losing the Recopa Sudamericana final to Lanús in February. For Jardim, the result exposes a squad depth problem: without Arrascaeta’s creativity and Léo Pereira’s defensive organization, Flamengo looked a different team. Pulgar’s suspension for the next match adds to the headache.

For Bragantino, managed by Vagner Mancini, the 3-0 win snaps a six-match winless run and lifts them to 11th with 11 points. The performance — clinical finishing, disciplined shape, set-piece creativity — was among the best in the Brasileirão this season. A brief post-match scuffle broke out when De La Cruz, Rossi, and Emerson Royal confronted Bragantino substitute Vinicinho for alleged provocation during the game.

Flamengo host Santos on Sunday at 5:30 PM at the Maracanã — a match where anything less than three points will intensify scrutiny on Jardim’s early tenure. Bragantino visit Mirassol on Sunday at 8 PM.
