Covid-19: two weeks after extended holidays, cases and deaths increase in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Two weeks after the beginning of the ten-day super holiday, Rio de Janeiro registered an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths. São Paulo, which also had a holiday over the same period, registered a reduction in the number of cases, despite reporting an increase in deaths than March 25th.

Agência Brasil consulted the daily cases and deaths according to the seven-day moving average, calculated by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).

In Rio de Janeiro, 2,756 Covid-19 cases and 220 deaths were registered yesterday, April 9th, virtually the same figures as of April 1st (when deaths hit a record in the country): 2,769 and 222, respectively.

Compared to March 25th (two weeks ago), i.e., the last working day before the ten-day holiday, there were increases of 16.2% in cases (2,372) and 77.4% in the average number of deaths (124).

São Paulo

On the other hand, in São Paulo, the number of cases improved compared to 14 days ago and on April 1st. Yesterday, 14,421 cases of the disease were registered, 19.6% lower than the peak on April 1st (17,933) and 7.8% lower than 14 days earlier (15,646).

In relation to deaths from the disease, São Paulo registered 715, an increase of 50.5% compared to March 25th (475). Unlike Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo managed to reduce the deaths from the April 1st peak (890): -19,7%.

Brazil

A daily average of 2,820 deaths was registered yesterday, 9.5% below the record of April 1st (3,117) but 23.7% above two weeks earlier (2,280).

Regarding the disease cases, a daily average of 62,859 was recorded yesterday, 15.3% below April 1st (74,239) and 18.4% less than two weeks earlier (77,050).
