Christian Faith Linked to Higher Levels of Well-Being, Study Finds

A recent study by the American Bible Society has revealed a strong connection between religious practice and overall well-being. The State of the Bible USA 2024 report, released on Thursday, focused on the flourishing of various religious groups in America.

The study used the Human Flourishing Index, developed by Harvard University, to measure well-being across different aspects of life. The research showed that practicing Christians scored highest on the Human Flourishing Index, with an average of 7.6 out of 10.

This group outperformed other categories in all areas of well-being measured by the index. Casual churchgoers followed with a score of 7.3, while nominal Christians and non-Christians scored 6.8 and 6.6, respectively.

The study defined practicing Christians as those who attend church at least monthly, identify as Christian, and consider their faith highly important. Casual churchgoers attend services regularly but don’t prioritize faith as much.

Nominal Christians identify with the religion but rarely attend services. Non-Christians include both the religiously unaffiliated and those of other faiths. Researchers found the most significant gap between practicing Christians and non-religious individuals in the “meaning and purpose” category.

Christians scored 7.9 in this area, while non-religious respondents averaged 6.5. This disparity suggests that religious engagement may contribute to a stronger sense of life purpose. The report also noted an increase in religiously unaffiliated Americans, rising from 23% in 2021 to 26% in 2022.

This trend has remained steady since then, reflecting broader societal shifts in religious identification. However, the study uncovered some surprising findings about this group. Despite their lack of religious affiliation, 7% of “nones” reported using the Bible several times a year outside of church settings.

Additionally, 3% believed in the Bible’s total accuracy, and 10% claimed a lasting personal commitment to Jesus Christ. These statistics hint at a more complex relationship with faith among the unaffiliated.

John Farquhar Plake, Chief Innovation Officer at the American Bible Society, commented on the findings. He suggested that churches could potentially help non-religious individuals flourish by fostering deeper connections with faith communities.

Plake emphasized the importance of reaching out to those who may not attend services but still maintain some spiritual beliefs. The study’s methodology involved analyzing 2,506 survey responses collected in January 2024.

It forms part of a larger ongoing research project, with more chapters set for release in the coming months. This comprehensive approach aims to provide a nuanced understanding of religious engagement and well-being in America.

While the research shows a clear positive relationship between Christian practice and human flourishing, it’s important to note that correlation doesn’t imply causation. The study’s findings contribute to the ongoing dialogue about religion’s role in personal and societal well-being.

It also raises questions about how different forms of community engagement might impact life satisfaction and purpose. As society continues to evolve, understanding these dynamics becomes increasingly relevant.
