His answer was blunt: Chile will not solve Venezuela, but whoever does will have Chile’s support. He described Maduro’s government as a criminalized dictatorship, said a democratic election was “stolen,” and argued Maduro lacks legitimacy to rule.

The timing mattered. The same day, U.S. President Donald Trump announced what he called a “total and complete blockade” of sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela, a step designed to squeeze revenue and raise the cost of doing business with Caracas.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum urged the United Nations to prevent violence, keeping to Mexico’s long-standing view that foreign intervention risks spirals the region cannot control. Germany added its own caution about moves that could endanger peace.

Migration as a Security Test

Kast’s stance is not just about distant geopolitics. It is a preview of how Latin America’s migration politics may harden.

He won Chile’s runoff by roughly 58% to 42% on a platform centered on restoring order: tougher borders, expedited expulsions of people in irregular status, and a more aggressive state posture against drug trafficking.

In Buenos Aires he accused Maduro of blocking Venezuelans who want to return, preferring they stay abroad and keep sending money.

He vowed that remittances from people without legal status would no longer reach Caracas, and spoke of coordinating a “humanitarian corridor” with other presidents to return irregular migrants to their countries.

Venezuela answered quickly. Maduro issued a warning, widely circulated in regional media and on social platforms, telling Kast not to “touch a hair” of any Venezuelan and urging Venezuelans abroad to come home.
