Canada Expels Indian Diplomat Amid Sikh Death Probe

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh advocate for Khalistan in Punjab, was shot dead in Surrey, British Columbia.

New Delhi had labeled him a terrorist.

Justin Trudeau spoke in the House of Commons. He said, “Canadian agencies are investigating a link between Indian agents and Nijjar’s death.”

Trudeau called any foreign involvement in such a killing “unacceptable.”

He also urged the Indian government to cooperate in the investigation. Public broadcaster CBC reported that Canada expelled Pavan Kumar Rai.

Rai headed India’s external intelligence agency in Canada.

So far, India hasn’t commented on the case. However, last week, Narendra Modi expressed concerns to Trudeau.

He talked about “anti-India activities in Canada,” including separatism. These comments came during a G20 meeting in New Delhi.

Background

This case has caught global attention. It raises questions about international interference in domestic matters. Nijjar’s activism for Khalistan was well-known.

His death now puts focus on India-Canada relations.

Canada’s expulsion of Rai is a strong diplomatic move. It signals Trudeau’s stance on safeguarding Canadian sovereignty.

India’s lack of response adds a layer of complexity. Trudeau and Modi had recently talked about anti-India activities in Canada. The timing of Nijjar’s death is thus noteworthy.

The case could have broader implications. It may affect how countries handle allegations of overseas interference.

Furthermore, it highlights the challenges democratic countries face in balancing freedom of speech and national security.

Lastly, this case may influence future diplomatic relations between Canada and India.
