Brazil’s Best Cities for Seniors Ranked by Longevity Index

The Longevity Institute in Brazil introduced the UDIL index to evaluate how cities cater to residents aged 60 and above.

They used public data from sources like IBGE and INSS. The index has 23 indicators in three categories: health, social factors, and economics.

Cities are grouped by size: large, medium, and small. São Caetano do Sul in ABC Paulista ranks highest among large cities. So, let’s look at the top five cities in each group:

  • Large Cities: São Caetano do Sul, Vitória, Santos, Florianópolis, Curitiba
  • Medium Cities: São Lourenço, Gramado, São Miguel do Oeste, Adamantina, Concórdia
  • Small Cities: Peritiba, Rodeio Bonito, Dois Lajeados, Tunápolis, Lacerdópolis

The indicators cover important areas. These include healthcare facilities, vaccines, and financial stability for seniors.

Brazil’s aging population makes this index timely. The UDIL can help cities improve services for seniors.

São Caetano do Sul shows how good urban planning benefits seniors. Different types of cities, rich or poor, can offer quality living for the elderly.

This diversity is good news for Brazil. The 23 indicators offer a well-rounded view of what seniors need.

Other cities can learn from this data. The UDIL can also guide future policies for age-friendly urban planning.

Background

Demographic shifts in Brazil make this index increasingly relevant. In recent decades, the country has seen a growing number of people aged 60 and above.

Historically, cities have been designed with young families in mind. Now, there’s a clear need for age-friendly urban planning.

São Caetano do Sul sets an example for other cities to follow. Its top ranking suggests effective policies for its older residents.

The UDIL could become a crucial tool for cities aiming to adapt to this demographic change.

By focusing on diverse indicators, the index helps local governments understand how to create more inclusive, age-friendly environments.
