Brazil wants to deepen the partnership between members of the BRICS
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Thursday, June 9, the deputy special secretary for Foreign Trade and International Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, João Rossi, stressed the opportunity for the Brics, a group that brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, to discuss pragmatic ways to deepen the economic partnership among its members.
“More than ever, it is crucial to ensure the openness, efficiency, stability, and resilience of global and regional supply chains, considering a trade in goods and services,” he said during the videoconference of the 12th Meeting of Trade Ministers of the bloc.
The Brazilian representative highlighted that, in 2021, BRICS countries’ exports to the world would grow 23.4%, reaching a total of US$4.3 trillion. Considering only exports within Brics, the increase last year was 32.6%, reaching US$451 billion.

“These numbers demonstrate not only the strength of our group but also indicate our untapped potential”, declared Rossi.
The meeting dealt with issues discussed during the first semester by the Contact Group on Economic and Trade Issues (CGETI), co-chaired in Brazil by the Ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs.
The authorities discussed issues such as the multilateral trading system and WTO reform, digital economy, value chains, trade, and investment for sustainable development.
SUMMIT MEETING
Thursday’s meeting precedes the 14th BRICS Summit, to be held on June 23rd and 24th, also in a virtual format.
The Chinese shift presidency touted the 2022 Summit as an opportunity for member countries to work to promote the spirit of openness, inclusiveness, win-win cooperation, strengthen practical cooperation in all fields, and embark on a new journey of group partnerships.
