Most residents of large favelas in São Paulo are between 18 and 44 years old, single, and have an income of up to US$560

A survey conducted by the Favela Diz Institute examined the profile of residents of the two largest municipalities in the city of São Paulo, Heliópolis and Paraisópolis, in the South Zone of São Paulo, and found that most residents are between 18 and 44 years old, single, earn up to R$2.8 thousand (US$560) and do not drink alcohol.

When asked about their income, 25% refused to answer.

About 36% of Paraisópolis residents reported earning between R$900 and R$1,800. In Heliópolis, 39.5% reported earning between R$1,200 and R$2,500.

As part of the survey, 400 residents were interviewed through a questionnaire.

In both communities, more than 50% of the residents are born in Sao Paulo, followed by Bahia, Pernambuco, and Ceará.

In Paraisópolis, 18.6% of the inhabitants were born in Bahia. In Heliópolis, 10.5% of the inhabitants were born in the state.

In the average of the two municipalities, 53.9% of the inhabitants reported that they do not consume alcoholic beverages.

In Heliópolis, the figure is 59.3%. Of those who do drink, beer is the most consumed.

Regarding religious affiliation, Evangelicals and Catholics are equally represented in both communities.

  • 34% of the inhabitants of Paraisópolis identify themselves as Evangelicals
  • 38% of the inhabitants of Heliópolis identify themselves as Evangelicals

In both communities, the age of the population is predominantly between 18 and 44 years old, representing almost 70% of the inhabitants.

Most residents in both municipalities reported being single, averaging 57% of the population.
