Brazil elections 2022: PDT party confirms Ciro Gomes’ candidacy for the presidency

On Wednesday, July 20, PDT unanimously confirmed Ciro Gomes’ candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic. The decision was made during a convention at the party’s national headquarters in Brasilia.

The party held its convention on the first day of the deadline set by the TSE (Superior Electoral Court). However, the officialization of the pre-candidate’s name does not allow him to ask for votes now. This can only be done as of August 16, when the electoral propaganda period begins.

The choice for the vice-president position was left until August 5, the last day of the conventions, to give as much time as possible to negotiate the position with other legions. The tendency, however, is to put together a pure slate.

Ciro Gomes has defended the "2 in 1" vote on his social networks: "You vote for one and get rid of the two," he says, in an attempt to draw voters away from the polarization between Lula and Bolsonaro.

PDT leaders affirm that, in this case, the desired profile is of a woman with protagonism that “transcends” politics.

The names suggested so far are Senator Leila Barros, pre-candidate for governor of the Federal District, and the former dean of USP (University of São Paulo) Suely Vilela, in principle quoted to run for state deputy.

For months PDT has been talking with Gilberto Kassab’s PSD – who recently announced neutrality in the first round – and Luciano Bivar’s União Brasil, with no result.

Ciro Ferreira Gomes, 64, is running this year in his fourth election for the Presidency of the Republic with the challenge of selling himself as an alternative to the polarization between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and avoid the flight of voters towards a possible “useful vote” to try to elect the PT candidate in the first round.

With communication under the command of former PT marketeer João Santana, Gomes has defended the “2 in 1” vote on his social networks: “You vote for one and get rid of the two,” he says, in an attempt to draw voters away from the polarization between Lula and Bolsonaro.

So far, however, he has not hit the double-digit mark in voting intentions.
