“Bacurau” and “Vida Invisível” Compete to Represent Brazil at the Oscars

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian Film Academy released the list of films qualified to represent Brazil at the Oscars. There are twelve feature films in the contest, and the chosen one competes in the category of best international film in the Academy Awards.

The jury award winner at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, “Bacurau”, by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, is among the titles in the contest at the Oscars. In Brazil, “Bacurau” will premier on August 29th.

Also in the contest is “The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão”, by Karim Aïnouz, which won the best film award in the parallel “A Certain Look of the Drench Festival”.




Filmmakers Anna Layert and David Shürmann are part of the special commission that chooses the winner, which will be announced on August 27th. Last year, “The Great Mystic Circus” was selected among 22 contestants but did not make the cut at the Oscars.

The Academy will announce the foreign films nominated on January 13, 2020, and the award ceremony will take place on February 19th, in Los Angeles. Check out below the complete list of films that may represent Brazil at the Oscar 2020:
