Brazilian billionaires’ fortunes shrink by US$14.9 billion in 2022

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian billionaires have given goodbye to US$14.86 billion in the first half of 2022, according to data from Bloomberg Billionaires Index for June 14.

The nine members of the list have a fortune of US$72.51 billion, a 17% drop from the US$87.37 billion at the end of 2021.

Eduardo Saverin was the one who had the most significant setback in his wealth: his fortune fell by half to US$9.12 billion. The reason is the 51.3% decline in the shares of Meta, Facebook’s holding company, which he founded with Mark Zuckerberg.

Technology stocks have suffered against a backdrop of a possible economic slowdown in the United States, with investors giving preference to companies in more traditional sectors such as energy - mainly because of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

It is no accident that Apple lost its position as the world’s most valuable company to oil giant Saudi Aramco.

The trio of the 3G Capital manager company also had a drop in personal wealth. Jorge Paulo Lemann gave goodbye to US$2.4 billion; Marcel Telles lost US$1.27 billion; and Carlos Sicupira US$1.24 billion.

In the same vein, Jorge Moll and his family – founders of the Rede D’or São Luiz – had a decrease of US$1.79 billion in net worth.

On the other hand, Itaú Unibanco shareholders had an increase in wealth. That is the case of Pedro Moreira Salles (with a high of US$188 million), João Moreira Salles (+ US$278 million), Fernando Moreira Salles (+ US$253 million), and Walter Moreira Salles Jr. (+ US$252 million).

LUIZA TRAJANO LEAVES FORBES LIST

The Brazilian businesswoman Luiza Trajano, who does not appear in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, left Forbes’ list of billionaires due to the fall of Magazine Luiza’s shares.

According to the publication, Trajano’s fortune peaked in July last year at US$5.6 billion. Since then, it has fallen in line with the retailer’s shares.

In the last 11 months, the shares went from R$23.90 to the current R$2.54, with the advance of inflation and the basic interest rate, which directly impacted the consumption of durable goods. In the year, the papers accumulate a fall of 64.8%.
