Police operation in Brazil after death of 1 military officer leads to 10 more fatalities

Ten people were confirmed dead following a police operation in Guarujá, Brazil, over the weekend.

This law enforcement response was triggered by the death of a military police officer last Thursday.

On Sunday, the police apprehended the individual suspected of being responsible for the shooting that led to the officer’s death, as the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported.

Residents of the area expressed concerns about the police’s actions, alleging that at least one person was tortured and killed by the Military Police.

They also claimed the police vowed to target sixty more people across the city’s communities.

In contrast, the Public Security Secretariat asserted that there is no evidence of police abuse but assured that any complaints received would be investigated.

The operation, named Operation Shield, will last a month and involve 15 special battalions, assault brigades, and around 3,000 local military police personnel.
