Pioneering Brazilian musician João Donato, icon of bossa nova, dies at age 88

Renowned Brazilian musician João Donato, a trailblazer in the world of bossa nova, has passed away in Rio de Janeiro at 88, as confirmed by his family.

He had been admitted to a hospital in Rio, battling a lung infection.

Donato received treatment in a Rio hospital for a lung infection when he passed away. His life will be honored at a wake scheduled for July 18 at the Municipal Theater in the city.

Boasting a remarkable career spanning 74 years, Donato was a contemporary of bossa nova greats like Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, and João Gilberto.
