As reported by the Civil Defense of Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, four fatalities, and nine missing persons have been confirmed due to heavy rains induced by an extratropical cyclone that hit the state in the early hours of Friday (16).

Rescue teams are persistently working in several areas affected by the cyclone, which has led to widespread destruction and loss of life across the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Authorities continue searching for missing individuals while assessing the damages caused by the intense rains, high winds, and flooding.

Weather forecasts suggest that the state could continue to experience rain in the coming days, which may further exacerbate conditions in areas already impacted by the extratropical cyclone.

According to media reports, the extratropical cyclone led to power outages in various parts of Rio Grande do Sul.

The CEEE reported that about 200,000 customers are without power in their concession area, with the Metropolitan and North Coast regions most severely affected.

In the coverage area of RGE, 68,000 customers are without power, primarily in the Metropolitan and Vale do Sinos regions, impacting cities such as Gravataí, São Leopoldo, Dois Irmãos, Esteio, Canoas, Novo Hamburgo, and Cachoeirinha.
