Covid-19: Over 80 Percent of Patients Have Recovered in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Thursday, September 3rd, Brazil reached the rate of over 80 percent of people recovered from Covid-19, according to a report by the Ministry of Health. The country ranks first in the number of recovered patients worldwide, followed by India, the United States, and Russia.

Globally, 17,347,345 people have recovered from the disease, 3,387,309 of whom in Brazil, according to the Johns Hopkins University ranking, in the United States. Proportionally, Russia has 81.9 percent, India counts 77 percent and the US has 36.3 percent recovered patients.

Early diagnosis and treatment are pointed out as the main factors for the high rate. “The early medical care is saving lives, increasing the chances of recovery and reducing the occurrence of severe cases and, consequently, the number of hospitalizations and deaths from the disease,” said the Interim Minister of Health Eduardo Pazuello.

In June, the Ministry of Health changed the policy and began to also test mild cases of the disease. Initially, the test was only conducted on hospitalized patients with severe symptoms.

To preserve the high recovery rate, the Ministry stresses the importance of seeking medical assistance immediately in case of temperature above 37.8º, headaches, fatigue, or loss of smell and taste. Throughout the pandemic, medical evidence has shown that the delay in seeking care can aggravate cases, which hinders the reversal of the patient’s clinical condition.

The number of recovered patients in Brazil is estimated by a calculation that takes into account the records of cases and confirmed deaths for Covid-19, reported by the state Health Secretariats, and the number of hospitalized patients recorded in the Flu Epidemiological Surveillance System.

Currently, Brazil counts 4,041,638 cases and 124,614 deaths recorded by the disease. On Thursday, September 3rd, the rolling average of new notifications of the disease stood at 39,824.6 and at 857.4 of new deaths.

The weekly rolling average is based on the sum of the number of cases and deaths in the past seven days, divided by seven, the number of days in the counted period – which allows a better evaluation by canceling out daily variations in the recording and forwarding of data by public health bodies, an issue that occurs mainly on weekends.
