Paraguay’s President-elect announces appointment of future Foreign Minister

Paraguay’s president-elect, Santiago Peña, officially confirmed Rubén Ramírez Lezcano as the nation’s future foreign minister on Thursday, with the appointment set to take effect once he assumes office on August 15.

57-year-old Ramírez Lezcano, an accomplished economist and diplomat, previously served as Vice Minister of Economic Relations and Integration, and Foreign Affairs Minister under former President Nicanor Duarte Frutos’ administration (2003-2008).

In addition, he held numerous public posts and was an economic affairs advisor for the Presidency of the Republic in 1989.

This appointment makes Ramírez Lezcano the second cabinet member to be announced for the upcoming governmental term (2023-2028) by Peña.

He is set to succeed Julio César Arriola. The first cabinet position confirmed was that of National Senator Enrique Riera Escudero, who was named Interior Minister.

In an official social media video, Santiago Peña said, “I have known Rubén Ramírez for years. Like me, he is an economist by training but with extensive knowledge of diplomacy, international relations, and the economic world.”

Peña envisions Paraguay as a globally integrated country, friendly with its allies, and actively participating in various international forums.

He emphasized the need for Paraguay to access markets that would provide Paraguayans with economic development and progress opportunities.

“I believe Rubén embodies this vision, given his economic background, international relations experience, and immense love for Paraguay,” Peña concluded.

Ramírez Lezcano, in response, stated his intent to develop an active international policy during his term, aiming to position Paraguay on both the global and regional stage.
