Paraguay commemorates 212 years of independence from the Spanish crown

With various official, artistic, and cultural activities, Paraguay commemorated this Sunday the 212th anniversary of its independence from the Spanish crown, which took place between the night of May 14 and the dawn of May 15, 1811.

The main ceremony took place in the esplanade of the Government Palace of Asunción, where the flag was raised, and cadets of the Military Academy sang the Paraguayan national anthem in the presence of President Mario Abdo Benítez and other national authorities.

At the same time, a 21-gun salute was fired from the Asunción waterfront by members of the Artillery Command.

The patriotic flag was lowered by agents of the Armed Forces of the Nation in the garden of the Government Palace.

Regarding cultural and artistic activities, they began last Friday, May 12. They will continue until this Monday, with the epicenter in the capital Asunción and other activities in the main cities of the country’s interior.

In the Plaza de la Democracia in Asunción, the great artistic festival called “Fiestas Patrias 2023” was held this Sunday, with the parade of a dozen national artists and live broadcasting by state television for the whole country.

Since 2011, on the occasion of the celebration of the Bicentenary of the national independence, May 14 and May 2023 were declared national holidays by the Executive Power.
