Claudia Sheinbaum likely to run for President in Mexico’s 2024 elections

Claudia Sheinbaum is likely to run for President in Mexico’s 2024 elections.

She served as Mexico City’s mayor and won the Morena party‘s internal vote, beating five other people who also wanted the role.

This choice sets the stage for Mexico’s elections in 2024. Sheinbaum, who is 60 and an author, is also backed by the Green and Labor parties.

These parties will team up for the elections next year. At a packed event in Mexico City, poll results were shared.

Sheinbaum got 39.4% of the survey votes from late August to early September. Marcelo Ebrard, a former minister, got the second-highest score with 25.6%.

Alfonso Durazo, a Morena leader, said Sheinbaum is in a strong position. He believes she can lead their platform called the “Fourth Transformation.”

Many politicians took part in the party’s internal contest. These include Marcelo Ebrard, Ricardo Monreal from the Senate, and former Minister Adán Augusto López.

They all campaigned around the nation from June to August. Political experts say these are vital elections for Mexico.

In June 2024, new legislative members and eight governors will be picked. Also, for the first time, two women will run for President.

Morena, the Green Party, and the Labor Party support Sheinbaum. A coalition called the Broad Front has picked Xóchitl Gálvez as their candidate.

Context

Mexico has a rich political history shaped by various parties. Morena, the party backing Sheinbaum, was formed in 2014.

It has rapidly gained support for its progressive agenda. The party aims for a “Fourth Transformation” of Mexico, focused on social justice and anti-corruption.

The Green Party and Labor Party have often allied with bigger parties. This time, they see an opportunity with Morena.

These parties share key objectives, like worker rights and environmental protections.
