Peru accumulates inflation of 2.1% in first quarter 2023

Peru’s accumulated inflation amounted to 2.1 percent in the first quarter of 2023 after the Consumer Price Index at the national level registered 1.19 percent in March, informed today, Saturday, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

Meanwhile, annual inflation, corresponding to the last 12 months, showed a variation of 8.67 percent for the national indicator and 8.4 percent for Metropolitan Lima, which in March, INEI pointed out in its technical report ‘Variación de los indicadores de precios de la Economía’ (Variation of Economic Price Indicators).

Regarding the March indicator, the institution specified that the 1.9 percent increase at the national level was mainly due to the “higher than national average growth” in the Education (4.76 percent) and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (2.32 percent) divisions.

During the third month of this year, consumer prices increased in 20 cities, with the highest variations in the northern towns of Piura at 2.59 percent, Trujillo at 2.39 percent, Chiclayo at 2.31 percent, and Cajamarca at 2.23 percent.

The country’s northern region was affected by heavy rains due to cyclone Yaku, which generated floods that negatively impacted the regular supply of markets with the consequent price increase.

In the case of the south of the country, the cities that were affected the previous month by social conflicts showed the “normalization of prices by regularizing access to the main roads and highways and improving the supply of various products” such as fuels and domestic gas.
