Cuba refutes WSJ’s claims of hosting a spy base targeting the U.S.

On Thursday, the Cuban government vehemently denied allegations made by U.S. newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” (WSJ), which claimed Cuba had entered into an agreement with China to establish an electronic surveillance base on the island targeting the United States.

Such defamatory statements have often been fabricated by U.S. officials who claim to have access to intelligence information, stated Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío. He referred to the WSJ’s report as “deceitful and baseless.”

Fernández de Cossío further highlighted previous unfounded allegations, such as the supposed sonic attacks on U.S. diplomats, the rumored Cuban military presence in Venezuela, and the non-existent biological weapons laboratories.

He emphasized that these are all false narratives propagated with the malicious intent of justifying increased sanctions, destabilizing efforts, and aggression against Cuba, as well as misleading public opinion in the United States and globally.

Despite Cuba’s sovereign rights in defense matters, the Deputy Foreign Minister reminded that Cuba is a signatory to the Declaration of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, inked in Havana in January 2014.

“We reject all foreign military presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, including the multiple U.S. military bases and troops, especially the military base unlawfully occupying a section of our national territory in the province of Guantanamo,” the diplomat asserted.

He concluded by stressing that U.S. hostility towards Cuba and the extreme, cruel measures causing humanitarian harm and punishing the Cuban people are unjustifiable.

In a parallel development, the White House National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, also dismissed the newspaper’s report as inaccurate, as reported by the U.S. outlet Bloomberg.
