Honduran prisons undergo security operation, over 1,100 weapons confiscated

The recent security operation by the Military Police of Public Order (PMOP) in 25 Honduran prisons has led to the confiscation of 1,105 firearms, as reported by the security forces on Monday.

As part of “Operation Faith and Hope,” the PMOP also confiscated 23,925 projectiles, 5,000 packages of marijuana and cocaine, 507 cell phones, and approximately 21,600 dollars in cash.

The confiscated items included high-powered rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, grenades, and makeshift weapons.

However, it’s estimated by the authorities that these represent only about 10 percent of the total expected weapons cache within these prisons.

Earlier this year, President Xiomara Castro initiated the security operation in prisons following an incident at the National Women’s Penitentiary for Social Adaptation (PNFAS) that led to the loss of 46 lives.
