São Toméan PR says country in deep crisis after 48 years of independence

President Carlos Vila Nova of São Tomé expressed concern about the country’s deep crisis after 48 years of independence, emphasizing the importance of dialogue among political and social actors.

In his Independence Day speech, he highlighted immediate problems exacerbated by international issues, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

These problems include poverty, an energy crisis, weakened purchasing power, unemployment (especially among the youth), fragile business conditions, inadequate justice system, and insufficient healthcare.

President Vila Nova acknowledged the long and difficult journey towards economic independence, but the country has struggled to generate jobs, wealth, and improve citizens’ quality of life.

Dependence on international aid, insularity, and poor decision-making contributed to the current decay.

He stressed the urgent need for real and immediate solutions, calling for unity, harmony, and peace.

The President emphasized dialogue and consensus among political and societal actors.

He highlighted the shortcomings in the healthcare sector, lack of resources and specialists, and the growing issue of mass emigration.

Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada acknowledged the challenges and stressed the need for action, expressing confidence in overcoming the difficulties through hard work, tough decisions, anti-corruption efforts, and strong measures.

Overall, President Vila Nova’s address emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive efforts to address the challenges and create a better future for São Tomé and Príncipe’s citizens.
