Mozambique’s president wants to strengthen economic cooperation with Russia

Mozambique’s President, Filipe Nyusi, has expressed interest in amplifying business investments to boost economic cooperation with Russia.

This statement came during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Saint Petersburg.

Nyusi shared this interaction on his official Facebook account, noting the exchange of information about the situation in both nations and the stage of their bilateral cooperation.

He added, “We encouraged greater business investment to propel economic cooperation, reinforcing our friendly relations with concrete actions within an environment of mutual respect.”

Nyusi further advocated for increasing trade exchanges and business interactions. He also stressed the need to actualize existing cooperation mechanisms.

Invited by Putin, Nyusi is on a working visit to Russia this week, the Mozambique Presidency announced.

Nyusi participated in the 2nd Russia-Africa Summit in Saint Petersburg during this visit, themed ‘For Peace, Security, and Development.’

In addition to strengthening ties between Russia and the African continent in various mutual interest domains, Nyusi’s participation in this summit also aims to reinforce bilateral relations.

Nyusi was one of the heads of state present at the Russia-Africa summit.

His participation was anticipated to reaffirm Mozambique’s neutrality in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict while enhancing bilateral cooperation.

The Russia-Africa Summit expects Russia and African countries to sign an action plan extending until 2026 and several bilateral documents.

It aims to evolve the relationship beyond defense and arms sales agreements, which have predominantly marked Moscow’s relations with Africa so far.
