Mozambique’s green revolution: unlocking hydrogen potential at Africa’s energy frontier

Mozambique, located on the southeastern coast of Africa, is abundant in natural resources and has been steadily working to modernize its energy sector.

The Portuguese-speaking nation has witnessed a surge in international interest, particularly from energy companies eager to tap into its vast potential.

Recognizing the global shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, local institutions are gearing up to adapt and innovate.

In line with this, Mozambique’s state-owned electric company, Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM), is considering venturing into hydrogen-based energy production, according to its CEO, Gildo Marcelino.

Marcelino mentioned ongoing research on the feasibility of harnessing hydrogen for energy, emphasizing its renewable and non-polluting nature.

As a country with a growing population and increasing urbanization, Mozambique’s energy needs are set to rise in the coming years.

Diversifying into alternative energy sources is critical to ensure the nation does not solely depend on traditional fossil fuels.

Considering the significant costs associated with such projects, EDM is looking at potential collaborations.

Marcelino highlighted a preference for public-private partnerships due to the substantial investments required.

Against the backdrop of a global push for reduced carbon emissions, hydrogen energy presents an attractive prospect.

In related news, UK-based Jearrard Energy Resources revealed plans in July for a 12-gigawatt solar-hydrogen facility in Mozambique.

With the world closely monitoring nations’ contributions to combating climate change, this initiative is slated to commence early next year, aiming to produce four thousand tons of hydrogen, addressing the rising demand for green energy.

The move not only underscores Mozambique’s commitment to a greener future but also positions the nation as a potential leader in the renewable energy sector within the African continent.
