Guinea-Bissau’s President praises Armed Forces for conduct during elections

During a military parade at the Armed Forces General Staff in Bissau, President Embaló expressed his gratitude for the professionalism of the defense and security forces.

He made the symbolic gesture of attending the event at the Amura fortress to thank them personally.

The President shared that he received commendations from the international community for the military’s detached stance during last month’s elections.

He highlighted that this approach showcases the military’s “republican behavior.”

Embaló further lauded the armed forces for aiding Guinea-Bissau in organizing “the most exemplary elections in its history,” which transpired in a “peaceful, orderly, and transparent” way.

While President Embaló expressed a desire to visit all military and paramilitary units where he had been before the elections to talk about the Armed Forces’ political neutrality, he noted that his schedule would not allow it.

Instead, General Biague Na Ntan, the head of the Armed Forces, will undertake this task.

Speaking about the nation’s future, the President noted that the election results are in, and the new Government will operate “under the guidance of the President of the Republic.”

He stressed the importance of the new Government recognizing the need for additional support and attention to the Armed Forces.

The Inclusive Alliance Platform (PAI) – Terra Ranka, led by Domingos Simões Pereira, who is also the president of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), emerged victorious in the June 4 legislative elections.

They gained an absolute majority with 54 out of the 102 parliament members.
