Woman and 9-year-old girl killed, 20 injured in shooting at Carnival parade in Rio de Janeiro state

A woman and a 9-year-old girl were killed by gunfire after a police officer and a suspected criminal shootout in the middle of a Carnival party in the municipality of Magé, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, local police confirmed Monday.

The Homicide Division of the Rio de Janeiro Police detailed that the shooting occurred on Sunday in the municipality located 60 kilometers from the city of Rio de Janeiro after the subject with a criminal record named Flavio Serafim opened fire on policeman Rodolfo Brito Santos, who was hospitalized and is seriously wounded.

Serafim was also wounded and is being held in a hospital in the neighboring city of Duque de Caxias.

According to local press reports, the shooting occurred during the Magé Carnival parade, which caused panic among the attendees, in addition to the two deaths and about 20 injured.

The Globo news network reported that among the injured, there are two pregnant women and two children hospitalized in severe condition.
