Russia signals to trade Brazilian neutrality for economic interests

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Russian Foreign Policy Council member Dmitry Razumovsky said that Brazil’s neutrality in the Ukraine conflict would increase economic interest in the country. The statement was made in a debate on how the 2022 elections will affect the relationship between Brazil and Russia, held on Wednesday, March 2.

The event took place two days after the Brazilian ambassador in Moscow visited the Russian council.

“I even venture to say that given the threat of isolation from the West, the importance of Brazil and the Brazilian market may grow significantly with its neutrality policy,” Razumovsky said. “Very soon, we can expect an increase in the interest of Russian companies in the country.”

On the elections, Razumovsky further stated that “with Bolsonaro, clear priorities and directions need to be developed. Despite negative assessments of current events, Brazilians are very pragmatic.”

“Thousands of Brazilians have gained access to banking services previously unavailable to them. It is undoubtedly Bolsonaro’s achievement, who, unlike Lula [da Silva], managed to overcome this strong banking lobby and liberalized the financial sector,” he pointed out.
