Biden Advisor Expects Worsening Brazil-U.S. Relationship in Case of Victory

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Juan González, Joe Biden’s campaign advisor and the former vice-president’s advisor for Latin America during his years at the White House, warned on social media that relations between Brazil and the United States would deteriorate should the democrat win the November 3rd presidential election.

“Anybody, in Brazil or elsewhere, who thinks they can advance an ambitious relationship with the United States while ignoring important issues like climate change, democracy, and human rights clearly hasn’t been listening to Joe Biden on the campaign trail,” González wrote on Twitter.

The advisor also shared an article from The Huffington Post that sets out the Democratic candidate’s plans for conducting the relationship with Brazil. The article mentions Biden’s intentions to pressure the Brazilian government to guarantee the protection of the Amazon and other biomes. “If he wins, Biden will probably not back down from Jair Bolsonaro’s rage,” the article says.

In an article published last July in Americas Quarterly, Juan González had previously addressed the issue. He also stated that “the relationship between the U.S. and Brazil has enormous potential in a Biden administration, whose climate and economic agendas will progress jointly. The question for Brazil is whether its current leadership is prepared to address the monumental challenges of our time.”

“U.S. policy towards Latin America should prioritize cooperation, the rule of law and climate change, among other considerations,” wrote Biden’s advisor.

The U.S. elections are scheduled for Tuesday, November 3rd, although 47.5 million people have already voted by mail or at official polling stations. According to the average of the latest election polls prepared by RealClearPolitics, Biden leads voting intentions at the national level with 50.7 percent, against 42.8 percent for current President Donald Trump.

During his administration, Jair Bolsonaro deepened Brazil’s relations with the United States. Part of this rapprochement campaign was based on the convergence of ideas and ideologies advocated by both governments. If the Democratic Party wins the vote, these ties may be threatened.
