Anatel Opens Public Consultation on Rules for the “Internet of Things”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Since Monday, August 5th, Brazilians may submit comments and suggestions regarding the rules for the expansion of the so-called “Internet of Things” in Brazil. The public consultation, published in the Federal Gazette by the National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL), will be open for the next 45 days.

To this end, the concept of the Internet of Things was defined as "the infrastructure that combines the provision of value-added services with physical or virtual connection to devices based on existing information and communication technologies and their evolution, with interoperability."

Demonstrations sent electronically or by letter will be examined by the agency and will be published on the agency’s library website, where it will also be possible to access the government’s original proposal for regulating these technologies.

Contributions and suggestions, grounded and identified, should preferably be submitted electronically through the Interactive Public Consultation Monitoring System (SACP) form. A letter, fax or email may also be used.

In the latter cases, the document should be sent to the agency’s Planning and Regulation Superintendency, under the heading “CONSULTA PÚBLICA Nº 39, DE 2 DE AGOSTO DE 2019,” addressed to “Setor de Autarquias Sul – SAUS – Quadra 6, Bloco F, Térreo – Biblioteca, CEP: 70070-940 – Brasília/DF.”  Comments by email should be sent to [email protected].

National Plan

On July 26th, the federal government published the National Plan for the Internet of Things, defining a series of targets for the promotion of this type of technology in Brazil, outlining priority areas and developing a consultative body made up of several ministries to assess its application.

To this end, the concept of the Internet of Things was defined as “the infrastructure that combines the provision of value-added services with physical or virtual connection to devices based on existing information and communication technologies and their evolution, with interoperability.”
