Petrobras will expand natural gas production in the Northeast of Brazil

By Tomaz Silva

Petrobras will increase national natural gas production in the Northeast region by beginning the hiring process for chartering two platform vessels.

They will be destined for the Sergipe Águas Profundas project, in the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, about 100 km off the coast.

The president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, said that the Sergipe Águas Profundas project stands out for its expressive reserves, with the potential to boost the natural gas supply in the country and reduce the Brazilian dependence on the import of this input.

“Another advantage is that natural gas is the crucial fuel of energy transition,” Prates said.

“Not only for its versatility of application, as a source of energy for the most diverse industries and predictability of delivery, but mainly for its efficiency in emissions,” he concluded.

The FPSO (floating production, storage, and oil transfer system) units will be strategic to expanding natural gas production.

Each platform can process up to 120,000 barrels of oil daily.

The oil in the region is light, considered of good quality, from 38 to 41 degrees API (which measures the density of oil-derived liquids), and of greater commercial value.

Together, the two units will have the potential to offer up to 18 million cubic meters of natural gas per day.

According to the company, the project brings opportunities for the sector and for the states of Sergipe and Alagoas, with the implementation of a production project in deep waters above 2,500 meters, incorporating state-of-the-art innovations.
