Homicides in São Paulo drop 14% in May

According to data from the São Paulo State Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP), homicides in the state decreased by 14.5% in May compared to the same period in 2022.

Last month, 195 cases were registered, while the previous year saw 228 cases.

The secretariat highlighted that this is the lowest number of homicides recorded for the month of May in the past 23 years.

Moreover, the accumulated number of homicides in the first five months of 2023 is the lowest in the historical series, which began in 2001.

There were 1,136 homicides in 2023, compared to 1,168 in 2022, reflecting a drop of 2.7%.

Regarding robberies resulting in death, there was a slight decrease from 13 cases to 12 this year. Robbery cases also saw a decline from 19,749 registrations in 2022 to 19,254 in 2023, representing a reduction of 2.5%.

In June, the SSP-SP announced the establishment of a working group to review the crime statistics for 2022.

The SPVida (System of Information and Prevention of Crimes against Life) was created to provide cases in map format and through police reports.

However, rape cases in the state of São Paulo continued to increase, rising by 18.5% in May with 1,299 registered cases.

The secretariat emphasized that police action is no longer dependent on the victims’ consent, enabling law enforcement to act independently.

Additionally, the data released indicated a 1.7% increase in robbery cases in May, with 50,171 registered incidents.
