Dominican Republic opens doors to Brazilian beef and pork as global exports grow

Brazil, a major global meat exporter, welcomed the Dominican Republic’s decision to open its market to Brazilian beef and pork.

Considering the Dominican Republic stands as the second-largest economy in Central America and the Caribbean and has an annual meat demand nearing 120,000 tons, it offers a substantial market for Brazilian meats.

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture announced that after extensive negotiations and a thorough review of certification and inspection processes, the Dominican Republic has permitted the import of Brazilian beef and pork.

Carlos Fávaro, the Minister of Agriculture, highlighted this development as one of the most significant market openings for Brazilian pork in the past decade.

He noted that negotiations progressed swiftly after he met with the Dominican Republic’s ambassador in Brasilia, Patricia Villegas de Jorge, culminating in the market’s recent opening.

The Ministry confirmed that at least seven Brazilian facilities have been authorized to export their products to the Dominican Republic, with more applications under review.

Since January 2023, Brazilian agricultural products have gained access to 29 markets across the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

Projections suggest Brazil will produce a record 26.6 million tons of beef, pork, and chicken this year, with expected exports reaching 9.3 million tons.

Brazil ranks second in global beef production (following the USA), third in chicken (after the USA and China), and fourth in pork production.

In terms of exports, it’s the world leader in beef and chicken shipments and the fourth in pork.

Official projections indicate a 4.5% increase in Brazilian beef production and a 2.7% rise in pork production this year, although beef exports might see a 3.3% decline.
